Ginger shots or “wellness/immunity shots” are always remembered during flu season or winter. We can find it selling everywhere. Although, the store-bought ones besides quite expensive, they are usually way too sweet so people like it and buy them more. But they are not supposed to taste sweet, they are supposed to help with the immune system, and adding sugar to it won’t help.
So what should we do? A homemade version, of course! The homemade version is way cheaper, though usually doesn’t taste that good, because we are not adding any sweetener to it, and you can feel the pungency all the way down your throat. Like it should! I like to take them and I am always focused on the benefits, not too much on the taste in this case.
In spite of the name, this homemade version immunity shot is not only made of ginger and turmeric. We need ginger, turmeric, black peppercorn, olive oil (yes, you read it correctly), orange, and limes.
I suggest you give it a try because there are several benefits for health and it is an extremely easy and simple recipe to make.
Ginger and Turmeric Shot Recipe Ingredients:
Now let me tell you about the benefits of the ingredients and why this recipe helps with your overall health:
1. Ginger
As I mentioned in the Beetroot and Kale Juice recipe, ginger is great for the immune system. It reduces inflammation, helps digestion, and is full of antioxidants.
For this recipe, I used 140g of fresh ginger.
2. Turmeric
One of the main compounds of turmeric is curcumin and curcumin has several benefits for the health. It has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties like ginger (link to the article here). Other properties include liver protection, and antimicrobial (link to the article here) and it can increase memory and attention (link to the article here).
Although, we cannot enjoy the benefits of curcumin if we take it pure, because the body cannot absorb it very efficiently. Curcumin needs an enhancing agent to be absorbed properly, such as piperine, which is the main compound of black pepper.
For this recipe, I used 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder.
3. Black Pepper
We need black pepper because its main compound is piperine and piperine increases the absorption of curcumin so we can enjoy the benefits of curcumin. Piperine increases the absorption of curcumin by 2000%. So, yes we are adding this to the shots!
Piperine has also its own benefits to our health, which include anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, and neuroprotective properties (link to the article here).
For this recipe, I used only a teaspoon of black peppercorn.
4. Olive Oil
Curcumin and piperine like fat and they do not really mix with water, so olive oil is a curcumin and piperine helper in this recipe.
Olive oil also has some nice properties, such as antioxidant, and being good for the heart and for gut health (link to the article here).
For this recipe, just a teaspoon of olive oil is needed.
5. Orange and Lime
These 2 citrus fruits are rich in vitamin C and other compounds such as flavonoids and carotenoids that help the immune system. Some of the citrus fruit properties are anti-inflammatory and antioxidant (link to the article here).
Vitamin C is also good for the skin since we need it for the production of collagen (link to the article here).
For this recipe, I used one big orange and 2 limes.
How to make Ginger and Turmeric Shot:
This is another extremely easy recipe, all you have to do is blend all the ingredients and pass the juice through a sieve. The exact measurements are described in the recipe form below.
So, here is how you make it:
First, wash the limes, orange, and ginger, since we are blending them with the peel. Cut them to make it easier for your blender.
Then add all your ingredients in the blender with water and blend until smooth.
Important: if your blender is made of plastic, you might want to add and whisk the turmeric with the other ingredients blended into a juice in a separate bowl to avoid getting your blender forever yellow. Mine is made of glass, so I added all the ingredients directly into the blender.
Pass the juice through a sieve and try to get as much liquid as possible, by squeezing it against the sieve.
Pour it into a clean airtight container or a clean glass bottle and store it in the fridge for around a week.
Remember to shake it before drinking it because the ingredients tend to go to the bottom of the flask with time.
The taste gets bitter on the next day but that is completely normal. Think about the benefits when drinking it!
I hope you enjoy it!
